Primary impressions: barriers to primary care may run deeper than you think
Article Abstract:
There are many barriers to primary health care access even for people, such as Medicare recipients, who are entitled to care. Outpatient services administrators may be unaware of these barriers. A grant program called Open Doors will offer $5.5 million in grant money to 10 to 15 programs aimed at improving health care access to women and children. These programs include administering health care from mobile vans, asking for community input regarding convenient times and places or hiring a diverse staff that can consider the problem from a variety of viewpoints.

Talk shows
Article Abstract:
Executives from seven large health care companies gathered for a forum at Northwestern University to discuss changes in the health care industry. They felt that the wave of consolidations has begun to produce improvements, but will continue for some time. They agreed that the introduction of market forces would continue to shape health care reform. They thought that the current system continues to place too much emphasis on treatment and not enough on prevention.
