Providing health insurance to the short-term unemployed
Article Abstract:
A simulation analysis of proposed federal programs to provide temporary financial assistance to unemployed people for purchasing health insurance revealed significant findings. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), an existing program which provides for a continued health coverage, would need about $1.7 bil in 1998 to subsidize about 1.4 million unemployed workers. Moreover, COBRA would reduce the average number of uninsured people by about 350,000.
