Searching the literature: more resources to make the purchase decision
Article Abstract:
CD-ROM data bases such as HealthPLAN-CD and CINAHL-CD allow hospital materials managers to gain information needed in making purchasing decisions. HealthPLAN-CD contains abstracts and citations on planning, management, licensing, accreditation and insurance of health care facilities. On the other hand, CINAHL-CD carries an extensive collection of nursing journals, association publications, biomedical journals and other publications on health sciences, education, behavioral sciences, management and popular literature. Both data bases are cost-efficient and user-friendly.

Opportunity costs associated with long decision making
Article Abstract:
Materiel management executives may save their hospitals more money in the short-term by using a group purchasing contract instead of renegotiating a new contract. Such an approach is more cost-effective because it frees hospitals to concentrate on products and services which are not covered by group purchasing organizations and eliminates lost savings incurred during the renegotiation period.
