Surgeon volume and hospital resource utilization
Article Abstract:
A study in Pennsylvania on whether surgeons who perform a particular procedure more often incur lower hospital charges and shorter lengths of stay than surgeons with less volume finds in several procedures a significant negative association between volume and both hospital charges and length of stay. Separate regression models were used for total charges, ancillary charges and length of stay for cholecystectomy, prostatectomy, hysterectomy and intervertebral disc excision. Control variables are patient age, sex, admission severity of illness, insurance plan and hospital.
