Military maneuvers: DoD moves ahead with integrated clinical records
Article Abstract:
The Department of Defense (DoD) has developed an integrated clinical patient record system for its hundreds of medical centers around the world. The integrated system, called the Composite Health Care System (CHCS), is able to keep track of the thousands of military personnel that often move to different locations after less than one year. Navy Captain Paul Tibbits, program manager for CHCS, says the new system has improved patient satisfaction and made the medical staff more efficient.

Tax-exempt challenges continue
Article Abstract:
Hospitals may qualify as tax-exempt charities if they remain close to their original mission of providing health care to the community. The court cases of two hospitals that sought tax-exempt status are presented. St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, PA, won tax-free status by offering community programs, municipal loans and facilities to the city. Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA, lost its bid because it owned several non-medical businesses, some of which were for-profit enterprises.
