Temafloxacin: an overview
Article Abstract:
Temafloxacin is a new type of antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone group. It kills a wide range of bacteria in both the gram-positive and gram-negative groups. Temafloxacin is effective against bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma hominis and Bacteroides fragilis, that are difficult to eliminate with other antibiotics. In addition, it is effective in eradicating bacteria that have developed resistance to other antibiotics. Temafloxacin remains active in the body for a long period of time, for seven to eight hours. It is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, it can be taken orally, once or twice a day. It is extremely well absorbed into the tissues and the fluids of the body, but it does not penetrate the brain. Clinical trials have shown that temafloxacin is effective in treating infections of the genitourinary tract, including sexually transmitted diseases and prostatitis, infections of the respiratory tract, including the lower respiratory tract, and infections of the skin and skin-structure. Activity of temafloxacin and other fluoroquinolones against typical and atypical community-acquired respiratory tract pathogens
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of three types of fluoroquinolones, a newly discovered group of antibiotics, against various bacteria that cause respiratory tract infections was analyzed. Temafloxacin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin were shown to be effective against the group of gram-negative bacteria that cause respiratory tract infections. The susceptible bacteria include Hemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Bordetella pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis and Neisseria meningitidis. The antibiotics were not as effective against gram-positive bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, one of the major causes of respiratory infections. However, temafloxacin was two to four times more active than the other fluoroquinolones against S. pneumoniae. It is felt that temafloxacin will be an important antibiotic for treating respiratory infections. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
