Waking up the crib's dangers
Article Abstract:
Organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics launched the "Back to Sleep" campaign in 1994. This national program sought to prevent crib death by telling parents to place sleeping infants on their backs and by instructing them to remove potentially soffocating bedding. In Aiken County, SC, a coaltion called Growing Into Life started its own version of the campaign. No crib deaths from suffocation occurred in the county in 1996. Between 1991 and 1994, 22 Aiken county infants suffocated in their cribs.

The wisdom of the old ways
Article Abstract:
American Indians experience a disproportionately high level of adult-onset diabetes, partly due to the influence of the mainstream American diet. The Pima Indians in Arizona and the Indian Health Service's Aberdeen area are particularly hard-hit. Lorelei DeCora founded the Porcupine Clinic on Pine Ridge Reservation to educate patients on the diet, routine, exercise that can control the disease.

Turf's up: camps fight over minimally invasive technique, but truce may be near
Article Abstract:
Surgeons and radiologists are beginning to partner on the new image-guided breast biopsy procedure to reduce health care costs and establish guidelines for performance. Since the minimally invasive technique eliminates the need for a hospital operating room, it costs about $2,000 less than the older method. Surgeons are beginning to adopt the procedure from radiologists.
