Watson's philosophy, science, and theory of human caring as a conceptual framework for guiding community health nursing practice
Article Abstract:
The public health philosophy developed by J. Watson in the late 1970s is congruent with global approaches to health promotion. Primary concerns in this framework are ecology, caring, and holistic medicine, and a community assessment tool based on this theory has been created.

Power and caring: a dialectic in nursing
Article Abstract:
Nursing involves both power and caring, but many nurses feel powerless because most of them are women, and are used to being subjugated by men. The notion of caring is typically feminine, and is seen as devoid of ethics and knowledge. When nurses do feel powerful, it is usually in terms of male standards. Caring in nursing should be seen as powerful so that the feminine aspect of it is accepted as the norm.

Advocacy oral history: a research methodology for social activism in nursing
Article Abstract:
Advocacy oral history, in which participants tell stories of their lives, is a socially active method of research that may be useful to nurses. Some nursing scholars advocate a return to social activism as a central part of the practice of nursing, empowering nurses. Public health nurses distressed by changes in their practice have served as an example of advocacy oral history. Advocacy oral history from a feminist postmodern perspective may help participants to change political and social realities and may be seen as social activism.
