Will the voluntary medical staff remain intact?
Article Abstract:
Two views are presented on the future of voluntary medical staffs at hospitals. One view holds that voluntary medical staffs will continue in some areas of the country. For example, voluntary medical staffs will remain in rural areas where managed care organizations may not take hold and in urban areas where integrated delivery systems will employ salaried physicians and a voluntary medical staff. However, another view holds that large medical staffs will be replaced by physicians' organizations because the staffs are not viable economic entities.

Improving hospital/physician relations
Article Abstract:
Hospitals must improve their relations with physicians because they will have to work closely with them in establishing integrated health networks. Middle-aged, mid-career physicians may have the most to lose through health care reform and must be negotiated with carefully. In addition, hospitals should establish powerful physician executive positions within the hospital hierarchy and should communicate with physicians honestly.
