Work ethics and CQI
Article Abstract:
The management technique called continuous quality improvement (TQM) fits very well into the corporate goal to treat its employees ethically and function both as a socially responsible contributor to society and a provider of goods or services. Healthcare institutions are increasingly adopting the CQI paradigm, but there are several ethical issues that it does not address. These include the concept of a just wage for labor given, the issue of diversity in the workplace and the societal implications of investments and financial transactions. Successful implementation of TQM requires that these issues be examined and accommodated.

An ethics framework for assisting clinician-managers in resource allocation decision making
Article Abstract:
The creation of 'clinician-managers (CMs)' as part of a decentralized management approach to cost containment in the Canadian healthcare system has raised ethical issues around resource allocation. After surveying 3,000 CMs, the researchers established a Management Ethics Framework to help CMs navigate through the maze of ethical concerns. The Framework enumerates moral considerations from the patient, organizational, and societal points of view.

Ethical issues faced by clinician/managers in resource-allocation decisions
Article Abstract:
Decentralizing resource allocation decisions may create ethical issues for both managers and clinicians. These issues include such areas as fairness, consumer/patient choice, patient needs versus financial incentives, satisfying the needs of different groups of patients and professional autonomy. A clearer understanding of these issues can be reached by using an interdisciplinary approach.
