The kitchen contains many potential contamination hazards. Sponges, cooking utensils, cupboards and countertops are key areas for the spread of harmful bacteria and diseases. For example, foods should not be left on the counter to thaw as warm temperatures allow bacteria to multiply rapidly.

The Food and Drug Administration may revise the RDA of some nutrients in response to public concern that the guidelines have not kept up with current research. Calcium, Folic acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and carotenoids are some of the nutrients considered for increases.
