You and your life's work
Article Abstract:
The profession of dentistry, while gratifying, has its drawbacks. A survey of dentists by the American Dental Association found that 88% of respondents expressed satisfaction with their profession. The positive aspects of dentistry include the ability to work anywhere in the world and the ability to control working conditions and hours. On the negative side, dentists only make money when actively engaged in treating patients. Dentistry is also a high stress profession. Dentists are trained to be perfectionists, but perfection is not possible in an imperfect world. Stress can be reduced by maintaining currency in skills and by setting realistic goals in treatment plans. If work becomes unsatisfying, a re-evaluation of criteria for success may help.

'To dream the impossible dream...'(Editorial)
Article Abstract:
An Oregon doctor's efforts to propose legislation against capitation of health care fees may give patients greater choice in medical and dental care. The Oregon ophthalmologist used his own money to get the legislation before voters on the November 1996 ballot. He is opposed by the Oregon Medical Association and health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Dentists and doctors should agree that patients' wellbeing should be protected and that health care payment systems should be allowed to compete. Capitation of fees may lead to deprivation of patient care as a means to increase HMO profits.

Patients first and always
Article Abstract:
Public confidence in the dental profession should give a strong message to third party payers that additional layers of credentialing bureaucracy as proposed in the medical profession are unnecessary. Extra credentials would reflect dentists' performance records. Three studies have shown that the majority of people highly respect and trust the dental profession and are confident in dentists' performance. Concerns raised by participants in these studies included a desire for more thorough communication about their overall dental health and treatment options and costs.
