A 37-year-old man with AIDS and wheezing refractory to bronchodilator medication
Article Abstract:
An adult, male AIDS patient was diagnosed as having asthma, mucous plugging bronchiolitis obliterans, and chronic eosinophilic pneumonia. The 37-year-old man presented with shortness of breath and wheezing. Testing revealed no infectious agents. Asthma medication had only temporary effect. Symptoms and test results suggested an obstructive airway illness. The appearance of a lung-tissue biopsy sample under microscopic examination was compatible with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia and asthma with mucous plugging of the smaller lung passages. Treatment with high doses of oral steroids to reduce inflammation relieved symptoms. Symptoms have not returned in 8 months.

An eight-year-old boy with bronchiectasis
Article Abstract:
An eight-year-old boy was admitted to a hospital with a lung condition called bronchiectasis. This condition is characterized by an enlarged bronchus, which is the name of the main passages leading from the trachea to the lungs. He was from El Salvador and had a history of tuberculosis. A CT scan of his lungs revealed a mass in his right bronchus, and the bronchiectasis affected only his right lung. His physicians suspected that he had aspirated a foreign object, and bronchoscopy confirmed this fact. The small plastic object was surgically removed, and he recovered.

A 53-year-old man with left ventricular dysfunction four years after a heart transplantation
Article Abstract:
A 53-year-old man was admitted to a hospital with signs of heart failure about four years after receiving a heart transplant. He began having shortness of breath and a medical exam including an ultrasound scan revealed evidence of dysfunction of the left heart ventricle. Despite aggressive treatment, he eventually died. Several heart biopsies revealed evidence of two small heart attacks as well as severe arteriosclerosis in his coronary arteries. Research has shown that this disorder may be an immune reaction against the transplanted heart.
