A 38-year-old obese man with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and slowly progressive right hemiparesis
Article Abstract:
A 38-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of increasing partial paralysis on his right side. He had a history of hypertension and diabetes, and was very obese. He had experienced vision changes, and an eye examination showed that he had diabetic retinopathy. CT and MRI scans of the brain showed lesions characteristic of a stroke in the part of the brain that controls movement. Angiography of the patient's carotid arteries showed slight atherosclerosis that slowed blood flow. This would have affected blood flow in the cerebral arteries that supply the brain, but it is also likely that a small piece of plaque, or embolus, may have traveled from the left carotid artery to the left middle cerebral artery, causing a stroke. The patient was started on warfarin, an anti-coagulant, but continued to experience partial paralysis on his right side.

Last-ditch medical therapy: revisiting Lobotomy
Article Abstract:
The lobotomy, also called leucotomy, was devised in 1935 by the Portuguese neurologist Egas Moniz and it involved drilling holes in the skull and using a blade to sever nerve fibers running from the frontal lobe to the rest of the brain. Lobotomies were originally used to treat patients with depression but were later often performed to treat schizophrenic patients suffering from agitation and paranoid delusions.
