A 61-year-old man with increasing weakness and atrophy of all extremities
Article Abstract:
A 61-year old man with weakness in his limbs was found to have fatal progressive muscular atrophy, a disease involving the deterioration of motor nerves in the spinal cord. Beginning five years before admission to the hospital, the patient had progressive weakness in his legs and arms and eventually required a wheelchair. He responded normally to sensation, but his reflexes were poor. Electrical stimulation of his spinal nerves triggered muscle response and indicated chronic loss and gain of nerve function. The patient was sent home during his second day in the hospital, put on immunoglobulin therapy, and found dead five days later. An autopsy revealed deterioration of spinal nerves, and abnormal nerve cells in surviving nerve tissue. These abnormalities were indicated by abnormal staining with the dye eosin. The patient's death was probably caused by the severe weakening of his diaphragm, which probably caused him to stop breathing.

Case 18-2006: A 57-year-old woman with numbness and weakness of the feet and legs
Article Abstract:
A case study of a 57-year-old woman with longtime numbness and weakness in her feet and legs is presented. The electrodiagnostic studies showed evidence of axonal degeneration decreased amplitude of sensory potential and motor responses and electromyographic evidence of denervation in muscles of the distal leg and nerve conduction velocities were described as 'slowed' in the legs and 'mildly slow' in the arms.
