A 69-year-old woman with a sclerotic lesion of the femur and pulmonary nodules
Article Abstract:
A 69-year-old woman with pain in her right thigh and a fever was diagnosed with staphylococcal osteomyelitis of the femur with pulmonary abscesses. Osteomyelitis is inflammation of the bone, caused in this case by infection with the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. The woman was admitted to the hospital with a suspected bone tumor. Bone tumors are characterized by bone destruction, but x-rays of her right thigh revealed sclerosis, or hardening, of the femur with bone formation and no signs of bone destruction. X-rays of her lungs showed abscesses. When she was 15 or 16, she was also treated for pain in her right thigh. Her history of thigh pain and the x-ray results suggested that she had late reactivation of acute childhood hematogenous osteomyelitis. This reactivation would result in circulation of bacteria and would explain the abscesses in her lungs. Flare-ups after years of dormancy have been reported in other cases of staphylococcal osteomyelitis. A biopsy of her bone tissue confirmed the presence of Staphylococcus aureus.

Clinical and biochemical manifestations of hyaluronidase deficiency
Article Abstract:
The first reported case of hyaluronidase deficiency is described. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that degrades hyaluronan, a component of skin, cartilage and synovial fluid. A 14-year-old girl had begun developing soft-tissue masses over several joints at the age of 7, including her ankle, fingers and knee. The masses were confirmed by X-ray, CT and MRI scans. She had elevated blood levels of hyaluronan and a complete absence of hyaluronidase activity. Her parents and grandparents were also found to have moderate hyaluronidase deficiency, indicating that her disorder was genetic.

Case 8-2005: A 10-year-old boy with pain in the right thigh
Article Abstract:
A case study of a10 year-old boy who suffered pain in the upper portion of his right thigh with a differential diagnosis, pathological discussion, and surgical treatment of osteoid osteoma are discussed. The technique of radiofrequency ablation proved to be a simple and effective way to treat most osteoid osteomas and was therefore recommended for the patient under discussion.
