A 73-year-old man with an enlarging inguinal mass 10 years after treatment for prostate and colon cancers
Article Abstract:
The diagnosis and treatment of an elderly man with an osteogenic sarcoma in the groin region induced by earlier radiation therapy is discussed. An osteogenic sarcoma is a malignant growth of soft tissue starting from bone tissue. A patient with a history of prostate- and colon cancer, treated with radiation and surgery, developed swelling in his left leg and pain in his left groin. A preliminary computed tomographic (CT) scan found a mass on the artery in his left groin. The results of blood tests were normal. Diagnosing the mass involved deciding whether an aneurysm alone was present and whether it could cause the swelling and pain in the leg. A malignant tumor was found during exploratory surgery and the part of the artery most severely affected was removed. The tumor was found in the area affected by radiation treatment. Because it developed more than two years after the radiation and because it was a different type of tumor than that found earlier, the tumor was classified as radiation-induced.

A 74-year-old woman with hyperparathyroidism and an osteolytic lesion in the humerus
Article Abstract:
A 74-year-old woman was diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism with a benign tumor in her right humerus, or the bone of her right upper arm. Primary hyperparathyroidism is increased secretion by the parathyroid gland caused by a tumor or an increase in the size of the gland. The patient was admitted to the hospital suffering from hypercalcemia, or increased blood levels of calcium, and an osteolytic lesion in her right humerus. An osteolytic lesion is characterized by softening, absorption and destruction of bony tissue. She had developed hypercalcemia and increased blood levels of parathyroid hormone six years before being admitted to the hospital. A needle biopsy of the osteolytic lesion revealed that she had primary hyperparathyroidism caused by a benign tumor in the parathyroid gland. The tumor was removed during surgery.

A 67-year-old man with osteolytic lesions of T11 and T12
Article Abstract:
A 67-year-old man with osteolytic lesions in the 11th and 12th vertebrae was diagnosed with Paget's disease. Paget's disease is characterized by repeated episodes of bone loss followed by an excessive attempt at repair. Bones increase in mass but become weaker. Fractures and pain are common. In the year prior to admission, the patient experienced mild, low-back pain that progressively worsened. At admission the pain was constant and the man was bedridden. Leukemia was ruled out because his white blood cell count was normal. Because of his age, Paget's disease, osteomyelitis and some forms of cancer were considered the most probable causes of his lesions. X-rays revealed that the posterior elements of the vertebra were involved, supporting the diagnosis of Paget's disease. A biopsy of the 11th vertebra confirmed the diagnosis.
