A Patient Decision Aid Regarding Antithrombotic Therapy for Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Article Abstract:
Decision aids may help patients choose which treatment they wish to receive. Researchers gave an audiobooklet (AR) decision aid explaining the results of a clinical trial to some of the study participants. They had atrial fibrillation and were taking aspirin to prevent a stroke. These patients had a more realistic expectation about the benefits and risks of aspirin therapy compared to patients who did not receive the decision aid.

Atrial fibrillation and stroke prevention
Article Abstract:
Many people who have a heart condition called atrial fibrillation should take an anticoagulant drug to prevent stroke. Atrial fibrillation means part of the heart stops beating, which can cause blood clots to form. These clots can break away and travel to the brain, causing a stroke. Anticoagulant drugs can lower this risk by up to 85%.

Direct thrombin inhibitors
Article Abstract:
Four parenteral direct thrombin inhibitors (DTIs), which constitute a new group of anticoagulants, sanctioned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in North America are examined. Conclusions reveal that no DTIs have substantially proved to be effective and safe for prolonged treatment following severe coronary syndromes.
