Disability and the future of Medicare
Article Abstract:
The aging of the US population may not bankrupt Medicare, according to a study published in 2003. The study found that healthy elderly people who lived longer than others did not incur greater Medicare costs. Disability during the final years of life accounts for two-thirds of lifetime medical costs. Finding ways to avoid disability among the elderly may produce the greatest benefit.
