A Phenomenologic Study of the Interface of Caring and Technology in Intermediate Care: Toward a Reflexive Ethics for Clinical Practice
Article Abstract:
Nurses in intermediate care facilities or nursing homes face difficult ethical issues in resolving conflicts between medical technology and patient dignity. Decisions regarding technological use may not conform to individual morals. Conflicts can include informed consent requirements, living will provisions, patient and family directives and futility concerns. Legal precedents such as patient rights fail to address all participants involved in medical care decision-making processes.

Technology and Care in a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit: Creating and Assuaging Vulnerability
Article Abstract:
Medical technology and patient care present nurses in bone marrow transplant units with difficult and occasionally conflicting roles. While a focus on technology is critical to patient outcomes, it may sometimes interfere with the amount of attention and emotional support nurses are able to give to patients. Input from patients is also important in assessing perceived quality of care and establishing a balance between technological and ethical aspects.

Technology and True Presence in Nursing
Article Abstract:
Nurses should become familiar with new medical technologies to ensure continued efficiency and attention to ethical issues. By defining their role in an increasingly mechanistic and automated environment, nurses can provide a link between patients and medical personnel, maintaining medical care's focus on patients rather than on technological processes. This will also prevent nurses from being marginalized.
