Implementing the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research pain management pediatric guideline in a multicultural practice setting
Article Abstract:
A plan for implementing the US Agency for Health Care Policy and Research standard for managing pain in pediatric patients was developed, instituted and assessed in a Saudi Arabian hospital's pediatric unit. Effects of the plan were studied using 240 pediatric patients between one week and 14 years of age over an eight-month period. The plan required nurses to assess, act to alleviate, evaluate and document patient pain using their experience or forms completed by the older patients. Results showed that nurses failed frequently to employ non-pharmaceutical interventions and to reassess pain relief.

A survey of multicultural awareness among hospital and clinical staff
Article Abstract:
The Interdisciplinary Multicultural Patient Care Team at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and Children's Hospital conducted a hospital-wide survey beginning in June 1995. The survey explored the ability of medical personnel to address the needs of patients from a variety of cultures. Assistance was needed to work with multicultural patients for 83% of the 872 respondents. Necessary improvements indicated by the survey include more interpreters, especially during off hours; a more culturally diverse staff; and a greater variety of religious services.
