A Quarter Century at Health Maintenance

Article Abstract:

December 29, 1998 marked the 25th anniversary of the signing of the HMO Act of 1973 by Pres Nixon. Nixon wanted government to move health care financing from an indemnity system to a prepaid system, mostly to control rising health care costs. The law not only provided means to contain costs but assured quality standards. Some observers say quality has lagged behind cost containment. The law originally shifted power from physicians and insurers to employers. However, the next phase may see power shift to patients, as they exercise their rights as consumers of health care services.

National plan for pandemic flu unveiled

Article Abstract:

The National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza-Implementation Plan released by the US Homeland Security Council in May 2006, sets out the federal government's actions in the event of a potential pandemic, along with roles of state and local governments, public health agencies, physicians, hospitals, businesses, and citizens. The government hopes to establish and maintain a stockpile of 20 million doses of vaccine against pre-pandemic influenza strains that present a pandemic threat.
