A back-breaking workload
Article Abstract:
Back injuries are common in the nursing profession. Analysts estimate that 80,000 UK nurses suffer work-related back injuries each year, and that 3,600 nurses retire each year due to back problems. One way to reduce this level of injury is to introduce equipment and procedures which allow patients to be less dependent on manual handling by nurses for their personal needs. This may include the provision of extra handles in toilets, or of sliding boards to aid patent mobility after an operation. Patients often feel more secure with these aids and appreciate their independence.

Thinking back
Article Abstract:
Nurse manager Beth Keenan has devised an innovative scheme to enable nurses with back injury to return to their former positions. Injured nurses initially return to work in their own clothes. They carry out normal duties apart from lifting. Absence of uniform is a visible reminder not to carry out activities that may cause further injury. Patients are also less likely to ask them to lift them. Uniform is worn when rehabilitation is complete. The scheme also emphasises the dangers of manual handling to colleagues.

The hidden scandal
Article Abstract:
National statistics have revealed back injury as the most serious health hazard for nurses. The National Health Service is suffering massive financial costs through sickness and wastage. Nurses often fail to report back pain or accept it as an occupational hazard. Training in patient handling, adequate staffing and mechanical aids could reduce the problem. New Health and Safety Commission regulations should ensure managers make provision for lifting from January 1993.
