Waking up to reality
Article Abstract:
Cuts in funding, and complacency are accompanying the slower than expected spread of HIV, and prevention work must be aimed at society groups which have been previously excluded. The stigma related with HIV can lead to violence, homelessness, loss of jobs, exclusion by friends or family, and fear of catching the infection. In a survey by Akinsanya and Rouse, 37% of nurses would prefer not to care for people with AIDS or HIV. A total of 7,000 men and women have contracted the HIV infection through heterosexual intercourse. The myth that heterosexual intercourse is safe is incorrect, and prevention should be targeted at this area. The adoption of safer sex must be encouraged. Cuts in AIDS-related funding are also discussed.

Free the spirit
Article Abstract:
Spirituality is not formally recognized by the nursing profession even though many are aware of its strengths and potential in nursing practice. More scientific significance is being placed on links between physics, psychology and spirituality even though nursing practice is still centered around the physical, rather than spiritual, well-being of the individual. Nursing professionals are reluctant to talk about spiritualism even though many of them have experienced it in their work.
