A breath of fresh air
Article Abstract:
The management of respiratory illness is expected to change dramatically by the year 2007 because of new drug treatments, devices and new CFC-free inhalers. A leukotriene antagonist is likely to be used to treat asthma because it does not have the side-effects associated with corticosteroids. New theophyllines are also being developed. It may be possible in the future to know which treatments will be suited to which patients by using a pharmacokinetic profile. A CFC-free steroid inhaler is to be introduced in 1998 and it targets the lungs more efficiently than traditional inhalers.

A mouthpiece for nurses
Article Abstract:
Christine Hancock has been the general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) for 7 years. The union only represents nurses and with 300,000 members has the greatest membership of any nursing union. Hancock points out that nurses join the RCN rather than a trade union because it is wholly concerned with nurse welfare and provides indemnity insurance. She also feels that the RCN has taken on many functions, such as support and information, that were once the concern of employers.

Face values
Article Abstract:
Many parents of children with Down's Syndrome put them through the trauma of plastic surgery in the belief it will make them accepted in society. The UK Down's Syndrome Association is against the use of surgery to improve the facial appearance of a child with the disease, unless on medical grounds. Parents should be encouraged to accept their children's appearance and help them cope in society, rather than try to change them.
