A bright future
Article Abstract:
Patients in the Czech Republic are suffering as a result of the comparatively low level of care, and the training of nurses needs to be improved. Within the nursing profession immature girls are being trained, and cold hospitals contain indifferent nursing staff. Communication and management skills need to be included in initial training. There is currently a 2-tier training system, but a new training programme is being introduced. The British system of registered and enrolled nurses could be used as a model for registration. In September 1992 the health service will be restructured. In northern Czechoslovakia a pilot training scheme is being introduced.

Ending of student grants outrages nursing unions
Article Abstract:
Nursing unions have condemned government plans to replace student grants with loans, exempting only the poorest from tuition fees. The move to end grants follows the National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education, chaired by Sir Ron Dearing, which proposed charges for tuition. However the British Medical Association and the National Union of Students have welcomed the plans for a bursary scheme covering students in health disciplines. Other recommendations include the creation of a training institute for lecturers and providing funding to improve research facilities.
