Comparison of a trial of labor with an elective second cesarean section
Article Abstract:
Many pregnant women who have had a cesarean section in the past may be able to deliver vaginally after a trial of labor. Of 6,138 pregnant women, 3,249 chose a trial of labor and 2,889 decided to have another cesarean. Although the rate of major complications was almost twice as high in those who chose a trial of labor, two-thirds of the complications occurred in those who failed a trial of labor and had to have a cesarean. There were no maternal deaths and the fetal death rate was similar in both groups. Women younger than 35 who delivered in a tertiary care hospital were more likely to successfully deliver vaginally.

Use of placebo surgery in controlled trials of a cellular-based therapy for Parkinson's disease
Article Abstract:
Researchers discuss their use of a placebo group in a study of fetal-tissue transplants for patients with Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease is caused by a loss of nerve cells in an area of the brain called the substantia nigra. Those cells can be replaced by using nerve cells from aborted fetuses. Several studies have shown that these transplants can lessen some of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. However, most if not all did not include a group that had surgery but did not receive fetal cells.
