A cost-effectiveness analysis of screening and treatment for Chlamydia trachomatis infection in asymptomatic women
Article Abstract:
The most cost-effective way to test and treat women for Chlamydia infections may be with a DNA test and a single dose of azithromycin if infection rates are higher than 6% in the general population. Follow-up counseling, notification and testing of the patient's sexual partners may also be advisable. Researchers analyzed the results of a computer model that predicted the outcomes and cost-effectiveness of three testing and two treatment strategies for Chlamydia infections on 1,000 women of reproductive age. The overall cure rates associated with standard doxycycline treatment taken for one week and each test were 54.8% to 56.2% for DNA testing, 43.9% to 44.9% for enzyme testing, and 40.7% to 41.7% for tissue sampling. Patients given a single dose of azithromycin, however, had as much as 15% higher cure rates and lower overall costs associated with each test. DNA testing was the most cost-effective testing strategy only at infection rates higher than 6%.

Recurrent urinary tract infection: new theories and an old remedy
Article Abstract:
There may be a biological basis for the use of cranberry juice to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Research in the 1980's showed that the juice contains substances that prevent bacteria from attaching to human tissue. Other researchers are studying factors that cause some women to have recurrent UTIs. These women may have a lack of antibodies in their urinary tract. One study evaluated a vaccine to boost the immune response and found that women who were vaccinated were less likely to have a recurrence than women who received a placebo.
