A dilution of skills
Article Abstract:
It has been claimed that introducing multiskilled generic nurses would enable a more efficient use of nursing resources, but there are a number of dangers in abandoning the idea of specialist nurses. Specialization enables nurses to gain greater knowledge and skill in a particular area, whereas generic nursing would merely serve to dilute nursing skills. One person could not possibly acquire all the knowledge and skill needed to deal with the enormous variety of health needs. It is therefore preferable for nurses to specialize first, and widen their knowledge and skills afterwards should they wish to do so.

Gender loving care
Article Abstract:
Nurses may be insensitive to the needs of transsexuals due to lack of knowledge. Transsexualism was not medically recognised until the 1950s and media coverage has perpetuated misunderstandings. Depression resulting from the psychological conflict of gender and roles is common. Nurses should encourage self esteem and try to relieve anxiety. They should avoid discrimination and challenge stereotyped practice.

Risky business
Article Abstract:
Incidents of violence against health-care workers are increasing. One in 200 health-care workers had been seriously injured in a personal attack in the last year, according to a 1987 survey. One in 21 respondents had been threatened with a weapon. Such violence costs the government roughly 30 million pounds sterling annually.
