A dysfunctional system may be adding to your stress

The Center for Physician Development has found that operational problems at healthcare institutions are often behind the alleged problems of the physician staff. One doctor who had been disciplined for not controling her temper was found to be working under an inflexible schedule. HMOs may not have built a good enough model into their systems for preventing physician stress.

Sewing a parachute: considering life outside of medicine
Article Abstract:
Many physicians are considering leaving the medical profession. They are under a great deal of stress as less skilled, less trained staff are replacing registered nurses. Physicians must ensure that every task has been completed for a patient because they are the ones who will be sued for malpractice. Future roles for physicians may include teacher and supervisor.

When patients die
Article Abstract:
Physicians often experience many emotions upon the death of a patient. Sometimes, a patient's death can cause overwhelming feelings of guilt, and if left unexpressed can development into depression, anxiety or isolation. To help physicians better cope with patient deaths, many medical schools are training students to deal with death and their emotions.
