Controlling chronic pain
Article Abstract:
The American Academy of Pain Medicine and the American Pain Society have released a consensus statement which includes guidelines for the use and prescribing of opioids in cases of chronic pain. Opioids have long been relegated to peripheral use, stigmatized for their association with a drug-abusing subculture, and physicians prescribing opioids have often faced legal battles and industry scrutiny. Opioids have been proven effective in treating chronic pain, however, and their ability to improve the lives of intractable pain sufferers makes them an invaluable commodity.
