The odd one out
Article Abstract:
In the past, learning disabilities have often been associated with a lack of social skills, subnormal intelligence, and socially unacceptable behaviour. In the early 19th century, those with learning disabilities were often relegated to workhouses or asylums. The Mental Deficiency Act of 1913 resulted in the creation of charity-funded colonies for those with learning disabilities.

Article Abstract:
Modern nursing in the UK evolved in the 19th century. Before reforms instigated by Florence Nightingale following her experiences in the Crimean war of 1854 to 1856, there was very little nurse training. Nurses often drank heavily, and many boosted their income by stealing from patients. Nightingale's system allowed a coherent body of nursing behaviour to emerge. Not all nurses were Nightingale-trained, but her ideas dominated, especially among nurses working in voluntary hospitals. Nurses continue to face the challenge of poor pay and poor conditions.

A fetching little lilac number
Article Abstract:
Uniforms for nurses were first introduced during the 1860s after nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale designed an outfit based on clothing worn by domestic servants. The social function of nurses uniforms has remained one of servitude, obedience and care giving. A servant's head-dress was an important part of the original uniform concept although it has become a symbolic gesture in the late 1990s. Research is being undertaken to design a uniform which offers comfort and practicality to nurses.
