A hard look in the mirror: organized medicine tries to polish its public image
Article Abstract:
Medical organizations are trying to improve the profession's public image, as polls reveal a low public opinion of doctors. Concerted efforts by the American Medical Assoc (AMA) include a corporate identity program, an increased public relations staff, an ad campaign profiling heroic physicians and a consumer health magazine. The AMA claims it will focus more on public health issues and less on doctors' financial interests, but the medical press is skeptical. The AMA and other associations are also trying to improve relations with the press.

Abortion training an issue for medicine, not legislation
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn (AMA) House of Delegates, acting at the association's 1995 meeting, endorsed the availability of abortion training to obstetrics-gynecology residents and voiced its opposition to federal intervention into medical-education accreditation. Federal legislators have promised to introduce legislation to allow medical programs to ignore Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education standards on abortion training.
