The Science Advisory Board of the US EPA has determined that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can create health hazards. Sources for VOCs include incompletely burned carbon monoxide, poorly vented gas heaters, formaldehyde, dust mites, fungus, dust, radon, lead and asbestos.

Hazards for skaters and swimmers

Public swimming pools and ice skating rinks can be public health hazards. Research has shown that gasoline-powered resurfacing machines can elevate nitrogen dioxide levels, and bacterial contamination in water sprayers can spread granulomatous lung disease.
