Medical management issues of patients on clozapine
Article Abstract:
Schizophrenia may be controlled by the drug clozapine when other drugs fail but, as with other psychotropic drugs, side effects can occur. White cell counts and other types of strict patient monitoring are necessary when using clozapine to treat patients. Clozapine therapy may cause grand mal seizures, agranulocytosis, central nervous system and hemotologic disorders, constipation, and excessive saliva. Proper pretreatment evaluation in selecting patients and ongoing management are important given the possible side effects.
