A heart in the right place: the Heartland Spa is an ideal escape no matter what time of year

The Heartland Spa, which is about 80 miles south of Chicago, is a converted dairy farm. It has massage rooms and exercise facilities. There is a high-tech workout studio and studio space for boxercise and other body sculpting enhancements. Seasonal outdoor activities vary according to the climate. A daily diet is limited to 1,250 calories overseen by chef Robert McGarrigle. Nutrition director Susan Witz gives healthy meal lectures. The clientele is about 95% female, including well-known Chicago resident Oprah Winfrey.

Heaven on earth

The tiny town of Osceola, WI boosts one of the must enjoyable spas. Missing is TV, fax machines, newspaper, butter or sugar. A woman describes her visit and the services offered. These include massages, beauty products, a wine cellar, soft music, fireplace and a gourmet restaurant serving light dishes.
