Not in with the in-crowd
Article Abstract:
Many GPs and family planning clinics in the UK are still not making the Mirena intra-uterine contraceptive widely available, even though this system has become highly favoured in continental Europe. Mirena has been shown to be as effective as the contraceptive pill, and can be readily removed, with full fertility returning in one month. It is not being widely prescribed because doctors tend to stick with more widely known contraceptives, and also because it is much more expensive than the ordinary contraceptive coil.

On the record: Electronic patient records are gaining acceptance after a shaky start
Article Abstract:
A London conference was told that electronic patient records (EPRs) would make nurses' lives easier and result in better patient care. The Department of Health aimed to prove to clinicians that computerized records could improve patient care with the launch of the EPR programme in January 1994. The Wirral Hospital NHS Trust and Burton Hospitals NHS Trust were chosen for the trials. A senior staff nurse at Burton believes that patient care has improved, and the NHS executive is optimistic about the future of EPRs.

Planting the seeds of good health
Article Abstract:
Fertile Imaginations is a mental health project which enables patients with mental health problems to work on an allotment digging, planting and tending crops. The activity gives the patients some independence, confidence and self-respect. The project is run by two occupational therapists and they can form good relationships with the patients and can spot early signs of any deterioration in a patient's condition. The scheme is expected to be run in other parts of the United Kingdom.
