A helping hand to youth
Article Abstract:
Established dentists should mentor new dentists. This could prevent new dentists struggling to build a practice from falling prey to managed care programs offering inadequate dental coverage at inadequate compensation levels. Dental societies could sponsor "big brother/sister" programs. Established dentists could refer emergency or overflow patients or patients requiring services the established dentist does not provide. They could also invite new dentists to dentistry study club meetings, social events, or to the meetings of professional or community service organizations.

Desensitization of cervical tooth structure
Article Abstract:
There are many ways to reduce tooth sensitivity. This often occurs because the gums recede and expose the neck of the tooth. The erosion of the tooth surface then causes sensitivity. Soft drinks are often acidic and can cause tooth erosion. People with bulimia often vomit regularly, which can also cause an acidic condition in the mouth. Sugar in any form can cause tooth erosion. Several tooth-desensitizing toothpastes are available, including a very strong one available by prescription. Patients should also stop eating and drinking foods that cause tooth erosion.

When it is best to remove a tooth
Article Abstract:
Most dentists prefer to leave natural teeth in place whenever possible. However, there are times when it may be necessary to extract a tooth. If a root canal results in persistent pain and sensitivity, the tooth can be removed. If a tooth has shallow roots and could not support a crown, it is probably best to remove it. Some natural teeth are out of line and may not be improved by braces. If dentures are planned and some teeth extrude excessively, they may have to be removed. Teeth with severe periodontal disease may also have to be removed.
