A milestone in AIDS care
Article Abstract:
Milestone House, Edinburgh, Scotland is a specialist hospice for AIDS patients. The purpose-built accommodation allows privacy and independence as well as social interaction. The hospice encourages a positive attitude through classes, activities and cultural events despite the fact that many patients are in the terminal stages of the disease. Psychological support for patients and families is emphasised and the special needs of children are being increasingly recognised. Extensive backup from acute facilities, social services and support groups is provided.

United we stand
Article Abstract:
Community nurses are in a position to support families caring for HIV/AIDS victims. This is particularly so when the disease strikes gay men, as often families are unaware that their sons are gay until the patient announces he has contacted the disease. As well as facing the fact that their children will die, there are many prejudices to overcome from the wider circle of family and the community. Nurses in contact with HIV/AIDS patients face many ethical, moral and medical issues, and the fear of infection, despite precautions.

HIV/AIDS
Article Abstract:
Nursing a patient suffering from HIV challenges the nurse on many levels. Good clinical expertise and an up to date knowledge of new treatements is vital along with an ability to consider the patient's preferences and needs. Nurses should also address their own feelings regarding sexual behaviour, class and race as patients with HIV will come from all sectors of the community. Maintaining confidentiality is of utmost importance as breaking it can have enormous repercussions for the patient and the nurse.
