A multicenter randomized controlled trial of home uterine monitoring: active versus sham device
Article Abstract:
The use of home uterine activity monitors may not result in better detection of preterm labor or lower rates of preterm birth in women at risk of preterm labor. Researchers provided home uterine activity monitors and twice-a-day nursing visits to 842 pregnant women at high risk of preterm labor. Home monitors were either fake devices that hid data from nurses and patients or real devices. The use of either type of home uterine activity monitor did not increase the detection of preterm labor, and did not decrease the dilation of the cervix at the diagnosis of preterm labor or the incidence of premature rupture of membranes. Home nursing visits alone may be more effective in detecting preterm labor.

Vaginitis, cervicitis, and cervical length in pregnancy
Article Abstract:
There appears to be no relation between infection of the vagina or cervix and the length of the cervix. An abnormally short cervix is a risk factor for premature delivery, but ultrasound scans are required to measure the cervix. Researchers wanted to see if diagnosing vaginal infections might be more useful.

Predicting risk of preterm delivery by second-trimester measurement of maternal plasma corticotropin-releasing hormone and alpha-fetoprotein concentrations
Article Abstract:
Measuring blood levels of corticotropin-releasing hormone and alpha fetoprotein can accurately identify pregnant woman at risk of premature delivery. It is most effective when combined with risk factor analysis and is more effective in this way than risk factor analysis alone.
