The role of the neonatal nurse practitioner
Article Abstract:
The first Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) training course in the UK began in 1992, but NNPs are already proving a valuable addition to the paediatric medical team at Salisbury District Hospital, England. The NNP is responsible for the neonatal intensive care unit, labour ward and theatres and attends all high-risk deliveries. The NNP's role is medically-oriented but NNPs' nursing skills enable them to provide a holistic, family-centred approach. Not only do NNPs provide a bridge between the medical and nursing professions, but they are seen to respond to emergencies more quickly than senior house officers.

A unique service?
Article Abstract:
More and more nurse practitioners are being employed in the UK. Most work in primary care. Nurse practitioners have been trained to take on delegated tasks. A few practitioners now work in specialist areas. Practitioners are accountable for their actions, as they can make decisions about patient care on their own.
