Family history and genetic risk factors: forward to the future
Article Abstract:
Taking an accurate family history may become even more important when many of the genes involved in specific diseases become known. The National Cancer Institute has created the Cancer Genome Anatomy Project, which will compile information on all the genes involved in cancer. Many other diseases could be said to be genetic, since genes can protect people from them or predispose people to them. Genes can even reduce a person's susceptibility to certain infectious diseases. Even when all the disease susceptibility genes are known, an accurate family history will be needed to identify people at risk before they develop symptoms.
