A new look
Article Abstract:
The opening of a purpose-built rehabilitation unit for disabled people has prompted the introduction of a holistic care approach. A multi-disciplinary team approach emphasises individual patient needs. Primary nursing teams ensure personal patient care. Each team comprises a primary nurse, first and second associate nurse and nursing auxiliaries. The team is accountable for its own caseload ensuring continuity of practice and high standards of care. Patients also benefit from familiarity with the team. However, a flexible organisational approach is essential to success.

The big challenge
Article Abstract:
The role of nurses in caring for the disabled is discussed. Nurses should become more political and socially aware in order to care for the disabled and support them effectively. The general attitude towards the disabled has changed in the last twenty years. The disabled are trying to have greater control over their lives and should direct the care received from nurses rather than just accept it. Nurses consider themselves the experts, but the study of disabilities by nurses should include the writings of the disabled themselves, as they are the real experts.
