A new way to care
Article Abstract:
Many people infected with the HIV virus are living longer than expected and, since 1995, there has been a 40% drop in the number of HIV patients being admitted to hospital. Between 55 to 60% of patients are opting to try new drug therapies but they are expensive and the cost of providing them has meant that many HIV services have had to be withdrawn. New policies have had to address the best way to care for this client group and London Lighthouse and Thames Valley University have developed a six-week course for carers which looks at these issues. The aims of the course are given.

Survival and beyond: challenges in the 1990s
Article Abstract:
Nurse education has changed dramatically over the past 10 years and schools of nursing and midwifery have to be flexible in their approach to the changing needs of the service to patients and to show the quality of their education. Individual trusts are mainly concerned about course content, the quality of recruits, ease of access to courses and quality of output according to a study. There are concerns about the emphasis on research at many universities, particularly the research assessment exercise, which some believe is detrimental to teaching quality.

Better by degrees
Article Abstract:
Doing a degree by distance-learning will allow nurses to develop their professional expertise and give them the skills to adapt to their changing workplace. Nurses will also find that they are more motivated, their analytical skills have improved and they have the knowledge and confidence to challenge poor practices or policies. They can work at their own pace and in their own time. There are many open-learning courses to choose from and students should select one which best meets their needs, and gives adequate support.
