A newborn triplet with episodes of respiratory distress and a pulmonary mass
Article Abstract:
A newborn baby was admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit after a premature cesarean section. He developed an episode of respiratory distress and chest X rays and an ultrasound revealed a cystic mass in his right lung. The mass was removed surgically and was found to be a congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation. These are caused by defects in the embryonic development of the lung. Most patients have a good prognosis following surgery if their respiratory distress is not severe.

A 32-day-old girl with a retroperitoneal mass
Article Abstract:
A 32-day-old girl was admitted to a hospital because of a mass in her abdomen. She had been diagnosed prenatally. A CT scan after birth showed the mass was near her left adrenal gland. The adrenal glands are on top of the kidneys. Surgery showed that the mass was part of her lung that had protruded below the diaphragm. Microscopic examination of tissue samples showed that she had a type 2 congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation.
