A painful issue
Article Abstract:
Health workers, women's groups and community leaders should be made more aware of the problems which can be faced by women who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM), according to speakers at a recent World Health Organization meeting for experts in this field. FGM is still very common in Africa, South East Asia and the Middle East, and is prompted by socio-cultural and religious beliefs. There are possible short-term complications, such as haemorrhage, and long-term problems, including infertility, sexual dysfunction and obstructed labour.

A kick in the teeth
Article Abstract:
Gloucester, UK, Health Authority's director of nursing practice development, Lynne Marcer, has been served with a redundancy notice, as a result of a restructure to meet the reforms of the National Health Service. Ms. Marcer considers the action a downgrading of the involvement of nursing in implementing purchasing policy. A petition with 400 nurses' signatures, calling for her reinstatement, has been sent to the Health Secretary, Virginia Bottomley.

Yours disgustedly
Article Abstract:
Four nurses from the Middlesex Hospital, London, England consider the 1993 1.5% pay award unacceptable. All are shocked, angry and in favour of strike action. They feel undervalued and consider the award indicates little understanding of nursing. The low award coincides with greater responsibility from the introduction of named nurses. All support union rejection of the award but none will leave nursing because of it.
