Assistants for the future
Article Abstract:
Health visitors have varied reactions to the employment of health visitors assistants with mixed skills. Most consider clerical work could be delegated. Health Visitor Veann Helygar welcomes more time for planning and visiting families with special needs. She considers assistants outside the field have valuable ideas to contribute. However, health visiting lecturer Sarah Cowley maintains health visiting is not easily broken down into specific tasks. Routine work is not always predictable. Some fear that skill mixing is finance rather than health need orientated.

All change in the ward
Article Abstract:
The role of the ward sister is changing with management decision-making becoming as much a part of the job as clinical practice. Ward sisters are becoming more aware of costs and funding and are increasingly involved in staff training and continuing education. Ward sisters are concerned that their clinical practice is suffering as their administrative responsibilities increase, but are not opposed to the concept of the sister in the role of ward manager.

A will to chose
Article Abstract:
The Terence Higgins Trust and the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics, King's College, London, England have devised a living will to make patients' wishes clear after they are no longer able to communicate them. The will can nominate a health-care proxy to make decisions for the patient. However, the Royal College of Nursing fears the advancement of euthanasia. Living wills are not legally recognised in Britain in 1992.
