A placebo-controlled comparison between betamethasone and dexamethasone for fetal maturation: differences in neurobehavioral development of mice offspring
Article Abstract:
Betamethasone may produce fewer neurobehavioral developmental deficits than dexamethasone when used for prenatal treatment of fetuses at risk of preterm delivery. Researchers compared the effects of betamethasone to those of dexamethasone on lung maturation and on neurobehavioral development in the offspring of 30 pregnant mice. Ill effects of dexamethasone included a transient developmental delay, separation anxiety, and a poorer memory process. Dexamethasone was one-third as powerful as betamethasone in effecting fetal lung maturation. Betamethasone costs less and requires fewer intramuscular injections than does dexamethasone.

Placebo-controlled comparison between a single dose and a multidose of betamethasone in accelerating lung maturation of mice offspring
Article Abstract:
Multiple doses of betamethasone appear to be more effective at promoting fetal lung maturation than a single dose of the corticosteroid. Researchers treated 90 pregnant mice with a placebo, a single dose of betamethasone, or four doses of the drug, then delivered the fetuses by opening the uterus. Fetuses from mice given the multidose regimen breathed more strongly, and had better alveolar development in the lungs. Compared to mice given the single-dose or placebo regimens, however, mice given multiple doses of betamethasone carried fetuses with smaller lungs.

Chronic prenatal exposure to carbamazepine and behavior on mice offspring
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted on 28 C3H/He mice to examine the effect of chronic prenatal exposure to carbamazepine on the behavior of mice offspring. Though the prenatal exposure induced subtle arousal effects and slow locomotor activity, carbamazepine does not have an impact on coordination, cognition, or responses to anxiety provoking conditions.
