Effects of selected vasoconstrictor agonists on isolated omental artery from premenopausal nonpregnant women and from normal and preeclamptic pregnant women
Article Abstract:
The contraction response of veins and arteries to the hormone norepinephrine may be more pronounced in pregnant women with preeclampsia than in those with normal blood pressure and urine. Researchers evaluated the effects of norepinephrine, serotonin, U46619, and endothelin-1 on arteries taken from the abdomens of nonpregnant women and from pregnant women with and without preeclampsia. Arteries from preeclamptic women showed the greatest contraction response to norepinephrine. Serotonin caused greater contraction in arteries from pregnant and preeclamptic women than from nonpregnant women. Endothelin-1 and U46619 caused similar contraction responses among all three groups. Increased levels of norepinephrine may be responsible for vascular constriction in patients with preeclampsia.

The direct action of 17beta-estradiol in isolated omental artery from nonpregnant and pregnant women is related to calcium antagonism
Article Abstract:
Seventeen-beta-estradiol may inhibit abdominal contractions by means of a calcium channel-blocking action. Researchers studied rings of abdominal wall obtained from pregnant and nonpregnant surgery patients. The relaxation response to various concentrations of 17-beta-estradiol was measured in rings contracted with potassium chloride, norepinephrine, and calcium ion. 17-beta-estradiol inhibited contractions caused by norepinephrine in nonpregnant patients only. 17-beta-estradiol inhibited potassium chloride and calcium ion contractions in both groups. 17-beta-estradiol is known to relax vascular smooth muscle.
