Regular disappearance of hte human papillomavirus genome after conization of cervical dysplasia by carbon dioxide laser
Article Abstract:
Carbon dioxide laser conization can eliminate papillomavirus infection in women with an abnormal Pap smear. In a study of 108 women with an abnormal Pap smear who were treated with laser conization, 73% tested positive for papillomavirus before the treatment but only 3% testes positive three years after treatment.

A population-based study of human papillomavirus deoxyribonucleic acid testing for predicting cervical intraepithelial neoplasia
Article Abstract:
Women with an abnormal Pap smear should be tested for human papillomavirus (HPV). Researchers tested 254 women who had an abnormal Pap smear and 320 women who did not for the presence of HPV DNA in cervical samples. Ninety-six percent of the women with a precancerous change called high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia tested positive for HPV, compared to 4% of the women with a normal Pap smear. Women with minor changes that were not precancerous were less likely to have HPV.

Type-specific persistence of human papillomavirus DNA before the development of invasive cervical cancer
Article Abstract:
Women whose Pap smear shows the presence of human papillomavirus have an increased risk of developing cervical cancer. Researchers analyzed Pap smears of 118 women who eventually developed cervical cancer and 118 women who did not. The healthy women had another Pap smear as did the women diagnosed with cervical cancer. At that time, 77% of the women with cervical cancer tested positive for papillomavirus but only 4% of the healthy women tested positive. The women with cervical cancer had the same virus type as they had on the previous Pap smear.
